What do counsellors do?

Counsellors have many different duties that are related to students being successful and happy in school and for developing “responsible citizens, dedicated to lifelong learning” (our school mission). We help with issues that are educational, personal, social and career-oriented. We meet with students, teachers, parents, administrators and the outside community; our role is to be the representative or ‘advocate’ for the individual student.

Here are some of the things we can help you with:

• course changes

• talking with teachers for you

• helping to reconcile friends who are fighting

• listen and help if you’re having troubles with friends, family, enemies or...

• help you with communication skills, decision-making and problem-solving

• help you to find information on careers and educational opportunities after grad by using books, magazines, computer programs and the Internet

• provide information on scholarships and bursaries for post-secondary education

• find ways to help you if you have trouble in your classes

• to get you in touch with someone who can help you if we don’t have what you need

• Coordination of programs and services related to counselling

• Consultation with parents, staff, administrators, outside agencies, other schools, etc.

How can I see a counsellor?

The easiest way to see a counsellor is to come in to the Counselling Centre and personally arrange a time to meet with your counsellor.
